This maple-necked Strat is a textbook example of Fender Japan’s attention to detail. The neck has some heft, but is shaped so that it feels comfortable under your grip, regardless of position. The vintage-style fretwire allow for wide bends, but is comfortable and inviting for all of us “old-school” players, for whom “sweeping” connotes cleaning out the garage. And the pickups? We ran them through their paces at settings ranging from effervescently clean to pornographically dirty. Although they did fine at the extreme fringes, not surprisingly they were most responsive at settings ranging from clean to mildly overdriven—they are single coils, after all. While not an unplayed example, this guitar’s finish exhibits only minor wear, particularly some pick scratches, but no major dings or scratches. For a 20-year-old guitar, the finish is unusually lustrous, bright and unpitted (the apparent marks in the photo of the back are really reflections). All original. Includes original plastic molded case (with one loose hinge, but still functional and solid) and tremolo arm. $450
