Finished in a luminous (and quite unusual for Guild) tobacco sunburst, this arched-back dread combines a spruce top and mahogany back and sides. That the guitar has been played some is evidenced by the wear on the back of the neck in the cowboy chord positions. That this instrument enjoyed “favored nations” status is also suggested by the fact that it has opened up nicely in the almost 35 years since its left the company’s storied Westerly, Rhode Island factory (Guild guitars in this era were typically heavily braced, which in our experience translates to a long breaking-in period). The guitar is very responsive. It’s also loud, and our experiments around the shop confirmed that it will cut through the bluster of a string band nicely and has plenty of headroom to withstand brisk strumming. No breaks or cracks. Slight marring to the top of the headstock logo (see photo) and some fretwear, particularly on the first five frets, but plenty of fret life remains. Ships in a non-original chipboard case. Sold!
