A well-played example, this guitar has its share of minor dings, scrapes, and boo-boos, but nothing inordinate and no breaks or major past calamities. We bought it from a woman who told us a convincing story of having jammed with Norah Jones in New York City clubs. There’s no way of verifying that story, of course, but the guitar bears every sign of having lived an eventful and exciting life so far. It bears the open, chunky tone that only comes from long hours of productive use.
This all-mahogany guitar is equipped with an LR Baggs M1, as used by Tom Petty, Jeff Tweedy, Daniel Lanois, and David Gilmour. The M1 is a magnetic pickup that also senses the vibration of the guitar top. It produces a round, nicely balanced tone tone that’s more natural and less “quacky” than many undersaddle piezos.
The neck angle is excellent, the frets still have plenty of life, the tuners work as they should, and the playability is excellent. A nice, affordable vintage Gibson.
